Introduction
Developing strong positive thinking and self-talk skills can be an effective coping strategy for a number of challenges, including anxiety, anger, depression, and more. Self-talk is the conversation you have with yourself and the messages you give yourself.
Objective
Develop a positive relationship with yourself through using positive self-talk strategies.
Materials
- Printed copy of a flower or paper
- pencil and markers
- Scissors
Steps
- Think about some positive messages you can give yourself. You want to be your own best friend who treats you very well! For example: I am a good friend! I have a good sense of humor! I do well at math! I am a great cook!
- Use a printed copy of the flower template, or draw your own.
- Think of some positive messages that you want to give to yourself. They should be short and powerful. Write those positive statements on the petals of your flower.
- Decorate your flower in a way that is pleasing to you.
- Now cut out the flower. Be sure not to cut the petals off. Now, fold the petals in.
- Open the petals one by one and read aloud the message on the petal.
- Hang your flower on the wall to read each day as a reminder of the strengths you have.
Reflection
- Why is it sometimes difficult to talk about our own strengths? Is it easier to talk about the strengths of your friends? Why do you think that is?
- How can you build on the strengths you have? What can make them stronger?
